My light switch 'zaps' when turning lights on

The 'zap' or 'splatt' is caused by arching in the switch mechanism. Arching light switches can be caused by a number of problems including overloaded circuits. Florescent light fittings can also cause arching if the incorrect switch mechanism is used.
